My version of a new Atlas Coffee Club Blog.
Have you ever wondered “Why does the coffee I use to make hot coffee taste terrible when it’s Iced?” Well, my friend, you’ve come to the right place! At Atlas coffee, we aim for you to have a world tour through coffee. We will first discuss the key difference between the most popular coffee origins. Then we will talk about which origins are better hot, iced, or work both ways.
Flavor Notes and Roasts
Have you ever wondered why some coffee might taste better than others? Whether it’s the roasting process or the brewing process. The origin of coffee itself is just as important. One of the most common coffee notes across origins is the chocolate notes. Most people would expect that note first. Other notes can be common but overlooked. Take the fruity or nutty notes. The fruitiness can be what helps to ground the whole flavor in a certain batch to be more palatable. The nuttiness often outweighs the fruitiness and brings out the coffee flavor best. This may be why we see more hazelnut flavorings or creamers and sometimes even flavored coffee beans. Let’s talk about the most popular origins right now for coffee. What comes to mind might be Columbia, Arabica, El Salvador, Hawaiian, and maybe even Honduras. The best coffee to some can be whichever coffee works best on a variety of roast levels and temperatures.
Certain notes and flavors will naturally taste better when roasted to certain levels. For example, I found that after trying El Salvador in an espresso roast it complements the notes of plum, milk chocolate, and honey beautifully.
Hot or Iced
Another factor as to why certain origins may play into the coffee quality is if you are using the right origins for hot and the right origins for iced. There seems to be a pattern with the coffee origins that taste best iced and have more fruity and sweet notes. At the same time, the best-tasting origins for hot coffee are usually more robust with nutty flavors and sometimes even spice flavors such as cinnamon. Some coffee experts I asked for recommendations. Generally, I would group the coffees that taste best Iced as the Brazilian and Ethiopian. The best coffees to have Hot are Peruvian, Columbian, and Mexican. For more interchangeable origins, I would group El Salvador, Guatemala, India, Nicaragua, and Tanzania.
